Headdress / Skaut

Voss, Norway, late 19th century

Linen on linen

Vesterheim 2007.020.002 – Gift of Ruth Hanold Crane

Married women in Voss wore headdresses with a distinctive shape. They were also distinctive for meticulous black embroidery and symbolic motifs. Derived from suns and stars, the motifs link the woman to the skies. She is also linked to the earth by the “wheat ear” designs that sprout from the center and by the “fertile field” designs found at the center of this complex design.
